APSTATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State coach Joe Paterno was knocked off his feet during warm-ups before Saturday’s win over Purdue, causing the crowd to gasp in surprise.
Paterno, 78, was walking across the field after talking with bystanders when he was slammed into by reserve defensive lineman Jim Shaw, who appeared to be looking away.
Paterno fell and his glasses went flying. Shaw offered his hand to help Paterno, but the coach waved off Shaw and pushed himself up off the turf.
Defensive end Matthew Rice picked up Paterno’s glasses.
Paterno didn’t appear to be hurt from the hit and headed back into the stadium tunnel to join the rest of the team in pregame routines.
CFT: Purple Heart honoree Daniel Rodriguez is awaiting clearance to walk on as a football player at Clemson.
Running back Ed Wesley will leave TCU for unspecified family reasons.
