ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer D. Wayne Lukas may have to add a new wing to his trophy case after added to his lengthy Breeders’ Cup resume by sending out Folklore to a 1 ¼-length win over a fast-closing Wild Fit in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

The 2.35-1 favorite grabbed the lead out of the gate, then raced in second in the middle stages after Gary Stevens made an early move aboard Canadian filly Knights Templar. Any doubts about the outcome were put to rest quickly entering the stretch, when Folklore burst out to a three-length lead that gave her plenty of cushion to withstand Wild Fit’s late bid.

Running time for the 1 1/16-mile race was 1:43.85.

It was a record 18th Breeders’ Cup victory for the 69-year-old Lukas, a high school and college basketball coach before turning to training, and his fifth in the Juvenile Fillies.

“We’ve been blessed with some good ones and we’ve been blessed with people that support us,” Lukas said, tipping the hat to longtime owners Bob and Beverly Lewis.

In words that would be prophetic, Lukas said he congratulated jockey Edgar Prado on his first Breeders’ Cup victory in 42 tries and assured him more would come.

“I told him going through the tunnel (it’s) like olives in a jar. After you get the first one out, they come easy,” Lukas said at the post-race news conference.

“It worked out beautifully,” Prado said. “Wayne gave me exact instructions to come running out of the gate but give her a little breather on the backside. She ran a good race.”
