Previewing NFL's Week 5

A look ahead to Patriots-Falcons, Steelers-Chargers, more

SUNDAY, OCT. 9
Tampa Bay at NY Jets: Severely undermanned, the Jets will be holding quarterback tryouts during the game. To sign up, just contact your local chapter of the American Red Cross.

Seattle at St. Louis: Mike Martz had to take himself to the hospital last week because of a sinus infection. Then his team lost, 44-24 to the Giants. He should either stay away from hospitals, or football.

New Orleans at Green Bay: The Saints were displaced because of Hurricane Katrina. Brett Favre’s family home in Mississippi was ruined. Maybe this game isn’t so important.

Chicago at Cleveland: Both of these 1-2 rebuilding teams are coming off bye weeks. So not only will they be bad, they’ll be rusty, too.

Baltimore at Detroit: The Ravens don’t really have a quarterback. The Lions have Joey Harrington. It’s a toss-up as to which team has the advantage.

New England at Atlanta: The Pats are coming off a 41-17 drubbing at home at the hands of the Chargers, who got Ladainian Tomlinson in the draft over Michael Vick. Now New England can compare.

Tennessee at Houston: The Texans are still looking for their first victory. The Titans won one game, against Baltimore. Odds-makers are too busy laughing to post a line.

Miami at Buffalo: Through four games, the Bills are the only NFL team without a second-half touchdown. Maybe they think out of the box and believe games are won in the first half.

Indianapolis at San Francisco: The game is being played in a stadium called Monster Park. In this scenario, that must make Peyton Manning the equivalent of Godzilla.

Carolina at Arizona: The Panthers had a short week, having had to play the Packers on Monday night. Actually, they probably only need a day or two to prepare for the Cardinals.

Washington at Denver: Somehow the Redskins have managed to remain in the ranks of the unbeaten with Mark Brunell at quarterback. Then again, in Washington a lot of improbable types rise to power.

Philadelphia at Dallas: The Eagles are coming off a big win on the road at Kansas City in which Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens sparkled. Maybe they should never talk.

Cincinnati at Jacksonville: A week after the Jags lost at home to Jake Plummer, now they have Carson Palmer coming in. They could complain to the league office, but that would be futile.

MONDAY, OCT. 10
Pittsburgh at San Diego: The Steelers lost to the Patriots at home in Week 2. The Chargers just walloped the Pats in New England. Psychological advantage: San Diego.

Silva: Each NFL team enters the offseason with a series of pressing needs. Sometimes a team can address them all, sometimes they ignore them all. But if a team's smart, they'll listen to us. These are the most crucial aspects for NFC teams.
