Goaltending: Crawford was an inconsistent performer during his sophomore season and briefly relinquished the No. 1 spot to veteran Ray Emery. In the second year of a three-year, $8 million deal, he’ll need a bounce back year to ensure there’s a future for him with the Blackhawks.

Player to watch: LW Brandon Saad. A 2011 second round draft pick, he came to NHL training camp after being selected AHL player of the week while playing for Rockford. But he has just 8-12-20 totals in 31 games and may need more seasoning. Saad played in two regular-season and two playoff games for Blackhawks last season.

Icing: With minimal roster changes since last season, Blackhawks could be positioned well to get off to a quick start in the shortened season . . . No fan unrest here. Blackhawks season-ticket waiting list increased by 250 during lockout . . . RW Ben Smith, who showed glimpses in a 13-game stint last season, injured his hand with AHL Rockford and wasn’t invited to NHL training camp.

Senators sneak past Penguins

PHT: Colin Greening scored 7:39 into the second overtime, lifting the Senators to a win in Game 3 and trimming the Penguins' series lead to 2-1.

  The Pittsburgh Penguins were under a half-minute away from taking a 3-0 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Ottawa Senators, but Daniel Alfredsson ended that thought by beating Tomas Vokoun to send the game into overtime. One overtime wasn’t enough for these two teams, so a second one had to be played in order to find a winner. Ottawa's Colin Greening scored midway through the second OT.
