NBC Sports: The Jason Page Show

Season preview: Maple Leafs

Stanley Cups: 11

2011-'12 record: 35-37-5-5, 80 points (4th in Northeast, 13th in East)

2011-'12 playoffs: Did not qualify

Coach: Randy Carlyle (279-191-64, 8th NHL year, 2nd team)

Top returning scorer: C Pavel Datsyuk ( goals, 65 assists, 97 points)

Top returning goalie: James Reimer (14-14-4, 3.10, .900)

Key additions: RW James van Riemsdyk; C Jay McClement; C Keith Aucoin.

Key subtractions: D Luke Schenn; RW Joey Crabb; G Jonas Gustavsson; RW Colby Armstrong; C Philippe Dupuis; C Matthew Lombardi.

Goaltending: After a solid rookie campaign, Reimer endured the sophomore jinx, as concussion issues limited him to 32 games. With only Ben Scrivens and his 12 games of NHL experience behind him, the Roberto Luongo-to-Toronto rumors will continue to burn red hot.

Player to watch: C Nazem Kadri. The first player Burke ever drafted in 2009 has endured an up and down roller coaster ride as a pro, with weight and attitude issues stunting his growth as a player. He finally seems to be finding his form, collecting 26 points in 27 games for AHL Toronto Marlies during the lockout.

Icing: Firing of GM Brian Burke just prior to opening of training camp was a stunner. Burke’s bombastic personality apparently didn’t sit well with corporate suits of team’s new owners, Canadian media giants Bell and Rogers. Four straight seasons out of the playoffs didn’t help, either . . . Replacement Dave Nonis is basically a calmer version of Burke . . . Leafs enter season without a definite No. 1 goalie, no sign of a first-line center and thin on the back end. In other words, it’s business as usual in Toronto.
