ReutersQ: When will the LPGA begin ranking players? I thought that was in the works?
— Linda from Neb.
A: You are right, Linda. It is in the works. The target date all along has been 2006 and officials are optimistic that it will be launched then. I can't tell you who will rank where, other than Annika Sorenstam will be No. 1.
Q: What’s the most common injury suffered by pro golfers? What’s the most difficult to overcome?
— Bill Fawley from Sedona, Ariz.
A: Without any hard and fast information to base it on, I'd say that back woes are No. 1. It seems there is an endless list of guys who complain about back problems. Most of them play through, around, or with the back pain, so I wouldn't think it would rank as the problem that is the most difficult to overcome. Shoulder problems, in my estimation, cause more trouble.
Then there is the mind. Though it's far harder to substantiate, I'd be willing to bet that more players have been sent packing by a few bad shots that they can't get out of of their mind than by any other ailment.
Q: With the end of the year nearing us, I am wondering who has the best shot for comeback player of the year.
— Brian from Charleston, S.C.
A: My vote goes to Billy Mayfair. He dipped to No. 140 on the money list in 2004, the first time in his 16-year career that he had been outside the Top 125. To have full exempt status in 2005, Mayfair chose to use a one-time exemption for being Top 50 on the career money list, a risky decision, but he's risen to the occasion. Currently, Mayfair ranks 19th on the money list, with one runner-up finish and six top 10s.
