EDMONTON, Alberta - Ryan Smyth’s shootout goal gave the Edmonton Oilers a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday night in the exhibition opener for both teams.
After neither team scored in the 5-minute overtime, Smyth tucked a backhand shot past Brent Krahn as Edmonton’s fourth shooter in the NHL’s newly implemented tie-breaking format.
Jarret Stoll scored for the Oilers in regulation, while Matthew Lombardi had the Flames’ goal in front of a sellout crowd of 16,839.
Stoll tied the game at 11:53 of the third period on the power play. Just over a minute later he received a major penalty and game misconduct for checking from behind.
Lombardi scored on one of the Flames’ three shots in the second period.

The league’s crackdown on obstruction was evident as the team’s shared 22 penalties, including seven minors in the first period.
