Brandon Rush cleared to play for Kansas

Prep star OKd by NCAA, could start for underclassman-laden team

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Freshman Brandon Rush has been cleared by the NCAA to play basketball this season for Kansas, university officials announced Friday.

Rush, who pulled his name from those applying for the NBA draft in June, enrolled at Kansas last week but had been waiting for the NCAA Clearinghouse to review his transcripts from three Kansas City high schools and Mount Zion Academy, where he graduated.

“I’m very happy about coming to school and getting this out of the way,” the 6-foot-6 Rush said. “It’s a great school, great basketball. It’s a great coach and it has great history. It’s close to home. I just like it.”

Rush, who averaged 21.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists last season at Mount Zion, wasn’t clear about how long he’ll stay in college.

“At my workouts, a couple of the teams told me I needed to go to college and see how that plays out,” he said. “I don’t know how long I will be here. I don’t know how my year will turn out.”

Rush is the brother of former Missouri standout Kareem Rush, who averaged 11.5 points last season for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats. He will join highly touted Mario Chalmers, Julian Wright and Micah Downs to form one of the top incoming classes in college basketball.

“Brandon and his family rightfully have been waiting for positive feedback from the NCAA Clearinghouse concerning his eligibility,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We received information from the Clearinghouse today and Brandon is eligible to pursue a college career this academic year.”
