After completing their third straight interleague series sweep, the Cleveland Indians begin a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox in search of their 10th straight victory.
Jake Westbrook pitched eight strong innings while Victor Martinez and Travis Hafner each added an RBI as the Indians beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 on Sunday to get their ninth straight win.
“It’s tough to put a streak like this together, but you could sense it coming,” Hafner said.
Following consecutive series sweeps of San Francisco, Colorado and Arizona, the Indians are 20-7 since May 21. Cleveland outscored its NL opponents, 86-40 en route to a 13-2 record in interleague play.
Currently 6-0 on their 12-game homestand, the Indians now look to ace C.C. Sabathia to extend the win streak to 10 games. The left-hander lasted just 3 1-3 innings before being pulled in his last start against Colorado at home, but hopes to fare better at Jacob Fields against the Red Sox.
Boston, which has won seven of its last 10 games, hopes to match Cleveland’s big left-hander, with one of its own. David Wells takes the mound, looking to stop the surging Indians and bring the Red Sox closer to the top of the AL East.
Wells has been hot in June, posting an ERA of 1.64 over his three starts.
The Red Sox avenged Saturday’s loss to Pittsburgh by blanking the Pirates 8-0 on Sunday. David Ortiz tripled to drive in two in the game.
“Not only was he on oxygen, but I think he took all our oxygen when he came into the dugout,” joked Boston manager Terry Francona, about the energy spent by his burly DH.
