OLYMPICS
EDWIN MOSES
If he had been a sprinter or a long jumper like Carl Lewis, or a miler, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. But Edwin Moses chose to excel in the 400-meter hurdles and that did not capture the imagination of American sports fans nor the media. Not even when Moses won 102 consecutive races beginning in 1977, a streak that included 89 finals, lasted nearly 10 years and took place in 22 different nations. Moses won gold at Montreal in 1976, was deprived when the United States boycotted the 1980 Games at Moscow, won gold again in Los Angeles in 1984 and finally succumbed to back injuries that relegated him to third place at Seoul in 1988. During one stretch, Moses had the nine fastest times ever in his event.
Honorable Mention:
Michelle Kwan: She’s won more world figure skating titles than anyone in history, is the sport’s greatest athlete and a classy champion, but, cruelly, never won an Olympic gold.
Bonnie Blair: Dan Jansen earned plaudits for his single gold medal in speed skating after his sister’s death from leukemia, but the Blair Bunch celebrated five Olympic golds.
