FRAN TARKENTON
While Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb have made it downright hip to be a mobile, scrambling quarterback today, it was a novelty when Fran Tarkenton did it for the Vikings and Giants back in the 1960s and ’70s. He didn’t just leave tacklers in his wake, either. Tarkenton was the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yardage with 47,003 until the wide-open modern era, with rules protecting quarterbacks and receivers, allowed Dan Marino, John Elway, Warren Moon and Brett Favre to pass Tark. Still, the nine-time Pro Bowler and Hall of Fame quarterback is oft forgotten when discussing the best players at the most glamorous position in all of sports. All the attention was on his feet, but too many observers failed to notice what he did with his arm. Losing three Super Bowls with the Vikings didn't help, but at least he got them there.
Honorable Mention:
James Lofton: Among the top 20 all-time in receptions and, believe it or not, No. 1 among elite receivers in average per catch as the greatest of all deep threats.
Curtis Martin: With little fanfare or national publicity, he has become the fourth-leading rusher in NFL history, with 10 straight 1,000-yard seasons to start his career.
Emmitt Smith: He’s the NFL’s No. 1 career rusher, but like No. 2 Walter Payton, you never hear his name mentioned in discussions about who are the best all-time runners.
Robins: It’s the Year of the Dragon on the Lunar calendar, and this Chinese influence could extend to it also being the year of the Pekingese on the green carpet at the 136th Westminster Dog Show on Tuesday.
NEW YORK (AP) - As the glow fades from the Giants' Super Bowl triumph, some New York sports fans are tuning in to basketball and hockey, with the Rangers in first place and the Knicks' overnight sensation, Jeremy Lin, sparking "Lin-sanity.''
Robins: This year, six new breeds will be making their debut on the green carpet for the Westminster Dog Show, which begins Monday.
