Yankees manager Joe Torre will be suspended for one game for his part in beaning Detroit batter Jason Smith last week.

NEW YORK - New York Yankees right-hander Paul Quantrill was suspended for three games, and manager Joe Torre was given a one-game ban after the reliever threw at Detroit’s Jason Smith last week.

Quantrill decided not to appeal and he and Torre began their suspension Tuesday night in Kansas City. Torre was surprised he was given permission to be with the team. He planned to watch the game on television in the visiting manager’s office.

“It’s going to be strange. You sit inside and watch it on television, it really gives you a completely foreign feeling,” Torre said.

Both were also fined undisclosed amounts.

Quantrill threw behind Smith and then hit him in the back with another pitch during the eighth inning of the Yankees’ 12-3 win on May 24. Torre and Quantrill were ejected.

Torre was suspended because warnings had been issued after Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was hit by Franklyn German in the seventh inning. Rodriguez had homered in his first two at-bats.

When Smith was hit, the Tigers took a few steps out of their dugout, and Quantrill egged them on by gesturing for them to come out and fight. Quantrill has made 15 appearances and is 1-0 with a 6.53 ERA. In his last appearance Saturday against Boston, he allowed seven hits and six earned runs in 2 2-3 innings.

He said he decided not to appeal the suspension because “it wouldn’t be worth it.”

“I just want to get going and get it done and start throwing again,” he said. “It (the suspension) is close to what the standard issue is now. It’s more, from my standpoint, whether I personally agree with MLB getting involved in the first place. I’m not going to change that. So it’s just a matter of taking the punishment handed down and moving forward.

“I think ... MLB has become overly active, actively involved in the game, the on-the-field game,” he said. “They’re trying to run the game the way they want to and you just have to play along with it, deal with it.”

Bench coach Joe Girardi stepped in for Torre.

“It looks like you’re watching some other team play, not the team you’re used to being alongside of,” Torre said. “But I’m confident we’re leaving it in good hands.”
