The Chicago White Sox extended the contract of manager Ozzie Guillen on Monday, making the move while the team had the best record in the majors.
The White Sox picked up the 2006 option on Guillen’s contract, added two more years and included an option for the 2009 season.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
In Guillen’s second year as manager, the White Sox have a major league-best 34-17 record. They have been in first place in the AL Central from the first day of the season.
“He’s got the exact attitude, the desire and passion for the organization and the city,” general manager Ken Williams said. “His players know that. I think he’s got the most out of them.”
Guillen, 41, is the 37th manager in White Sox history and has a 117-96 record with the team. He is the second-youngest manager in the majors behind Cleveland’s Eric Wedge.
“To me, it’s more responsibility,” Guillen said. “To me, somebody has faith in me and my staff. You have to look at yourself in the mirror and say you can’t let those guys down. That’s the way I look at it.
“I’m going to do everything I can every year to make my team be a winner.”
Under Guillen last season, the White Sox finished 83-79. He is the first native Venezuelan to manage in the majors. Guillen played 16 seasons in the majors, including 13 as shortstop with the White Sox from 1985-97.
Yankees' Wright resumes throwing
New York Yankees pitcher Jaret Wright played catch Monday in his first throwing session since hurting his right shoulder.
Wright was placed on the 15-day disabled list April 24, one day after leaving his start against the Texas Rangers because of pain in his shoulder.
The right-hander will throw again Wednesday and Friday. He plans to intensify the throwing program next week and will have his status evaluated in mid-June.
“It was nice to get back out there,” Wright said. “It’s been a while. It felt good.”
This is the eighth time Wright has been on the disabled list in his nine-year career, and the sixth time because of a problem with the shoulder — he had season-ending surgery in 2000 and 2001.
Wright went 15-8 in 32 starts for Atlanta last season. He signed a $21 million, three-year deal with the Yankees as a free agent.
In four starts this year, Wright is 2-2 with a 9.15 ERA. He has allowed 36 hits in 19 2-3 innings.
Vidro could be back after All-Star break
Washington Nationals second baseman Jose Vidro’s left ankle injury probably will sideline him until after the All-Star break.
Vidro, on the disabled list since May 9 with a partially torn tendon on the outside of the ankle, will need to wear a walking boot for about two more weeks, team doctor Bruce Thomas said Monday.
“He’s really coming along. His strength and his motion are better,” Thomas said. “Reasonably, the All-Star break is what we’re shooting for.”
When Vidro left a game in Los Angeles on May 4 because of the ankle, he was hitting .290 with six doubles, four home runs and 15 RBIs.
In the team’s 125 games since the 2004 All-Star break, the Expos-Nationals are 32-27 (.542) with Vidro, and 29-37 (.439) without him.
He’s one of 11 Nationals currently on the DL, the most in the majors.
