BOSTON - Boston College forward Sean Williams was suspended from the team and university after he was charged with marijuana possession.

The 6-foot-10 Williams, projected to be a starter next season, was arrested by campus police Friday. He pleaded innocent in Brighton District Court and is scheduled to appear at a pretrial hearing July 8.

After the arrest, Williams was suspended indefinitely from the team. He was also suspended from the university for the summer and fall semesters, sports information director Chris Cameron said.

The suspension required Williams to immediately leave campus. Williams, who averaged 4.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots last year as a freshman, was on campus taking summer courses.

“We will not tolerate this type of behavior,” coach Al Skinner said in a statement. “It is not indicative of the character of the young men in our basketball program.”

Williams was the second BC freshman arrested in less than a week. Akida McLain was arrested in his hometown of Pittsburgh last Sunday after allegedly trying to pass counterfeit $20 bills. McLain said he didn’t know how the fake bills came into his possession.

Skinner said there’s a possibility that Williams could return to school and the team.

“We will continue to provide him the help and support he needs,” Skinner said.

Cameron said the school hadn’t decided if Williams will lose his scholarship.
