APIt was Hoffman’s second blown save in five opportunities.
The Padres wasted a strong outing by Jake Peavy, who allowed three runs and six hits and struck out seven with one walk. He retired the final eight batters he faced and drew a key two-out walk during the Padres’ three-run fourth inning.
Peavy was three outs away from winning the rematch of last Saturday’s pitcher’s duel with Brandon Webb in Arizona, which the Diamondbacks won 2-1. Neither pitcher received a decision in that game.
Nevin homered to left field leading off the fifth inning to give San Diego a 4-2 lead.
The Padres erased a 2-0 deficit in the fourth. After a one-out single by Ramon Hernandez and a fielder’s choice, Sean Burroughs singled. Peavy fell behind 1-2 in the count before Webb walked him to load the bases. Roberts then lifted a fly ball that fell into shallow center, scoring two runs.
Loretta followed with a blooper into right-center field that scored Peavy for a 3-2 lead.
Doubles by Craig Counsell and Luis Gonzalez in the first inning gave Arizona its first run. Troy Glaus hit his seventh homer leading off the fourth, tying him with Chicago’s Derrek Lee for the NL lead.
Chad Tracy tripled one out after Glaus’ homer, but was out at home when he was officially caught stealing on what looked to be an aborted squeeze play with Quinton McCracken at bat.
Webb wasn’t nearly as sharp as he was during his last matchup with Peavy. The right-hander allowed four runs and 12 hits in six innings and constantly had to pitch out of trouble. Webb struck out three and walked two.
Green had a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning that pulled the Diamondbacks to within 4-3.
Notes: Padres SS Geoff Blum left the game in the first inning with a bruised chest after colliding with LF Ryan Klesko. The pair were pursuing Counsell’s fly ball to shallow left field. Television replays showed Klesko’s left forearm slam into Blum’s chest. Blum lay face down on the grass for about two minutes before walking off under his own power. ... Loretta also had five hits on Sept. 8, 2000, at the Chicago Cubs. ... When Peavy and Webb matched up last Saturday, each allowed one just one run. Webb pitched eight innings and Peavy went seven.
Josh Hamilton fights off illness to hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning, lifting the Texas Rangers to an 8-7 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
SEATTLE (AP) - Albert Pujols hit a home run in his third straight game and pinch hitter Alberto Callaspo came through with a grand slam in the sixth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 5-3 win over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.
