Totmianina, Marinin defend pairs title

Russians win for 2nd straight year at world championships

MOSCOW - Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin of Russia won their second consecutive pairs gold medal Wednesday at the World Figure Skating Championships.

The victory capped a season that began with a near catastrophe, when Totmianina fell on her head at Skate America in Pittsburgh and was hospitalized for days.

Compatriots Maria Petrova and Alexei Tikhonov won the silver, and Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao of China were third.

Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo of China had been in third place after the short program, but pulled out of Wednesday’s free skate due to an undisclosed injury.
