APALBANY, Calif. - Russell Baze passed the late Bill Shoemaker into second place on the list of all-time winningest jockeys Saturday, riding his 8,834th career winner aboard 6-5 favorite Hollow Memories.
Laffit Pincay Jr., who retired in 2003, holds the top spot, with 9,530 victories before retiring in 2003. Shoemaker retired in 1990 with 8,833 wins.
Baze, who entered Saturday’s card with 8,830 wins, reached the milestone victory in the seventh race at Golden Gate Fields. Hollow Memories ($4.40 to win) was his fourth win of the day. He also won the second race with Face Down Dave ($4.80), the third with Tularosa Kid ($6.40) and the fifth with El Prados Boy ($3.80).
“Now that it’s official, I’m glad it’s over,” Baze said. “I don’t really think about it, but when I do it’s like, holy mackerel, that’s a lot of wins.”
The 46-year-old Baze passed Shoemaker at the same track where Shoemaker scored his first career victory in 1949.
“He was my idol,” Baze said of Shoemaker. “He’s the idol of every jock. He set the standard to match.”
Baze, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, began his riding career in Washington in 1974 and rode his first winner at Yakima Meadows. He has led the nation in victories seven times: 2002 (431 wins), 2000 (412), 1996 (415), 1995 (448), 1994 (415), 1993 (410), and 1992 (433).
The first of three pools of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager begins its three-day run on Friday and the bet's opening scenario is very similar to each of its opening pools since the wager was created in 1999.
It's first time that Classic will be broadcast in primetime on Nov. 3.
