AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Dwyane Wade can take two items off his wish list: a triple-double and a win over the Detroit Pistons.

Wade had 31 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds to lead the Miami Heat past Detroit 89-78 Thursday night to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 13 games.

“It feels good to get my first triple-double in the NBA because I got it out of the way and it shows you’re playing a team game,” Wade said. “And, it feels good to beat the Pistons because I haven’t done that in my young career.”

Wade, in his second NBA season, dominated the Pistons with unstoppable drives, timely passes and rebounding. He was 12-of-18 from the field and made 7 of 10 free throws. Wade’s 10 rebounds matched a career high.

Shaquille O’Neal, with a sore back and ribs, had 21 points for the Heat.

O’Neal played with Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles and Penny Hardaway in Orlando, but said neither matched up with Wade at this point in their careers.

“He’s the best second-year pupil that I’ve had,” O’Neal said. “I’ve raised two great ones in my NBA lifetime and this guy is the best in his second year.”

Miami, which last lost on Dec. 4, won 14 games in a month for the first time.

“I can appreciate it, but I can’t enjoy it because we play again Saturday,” Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said.

The Pistons led for much of the game before falling apart in the fourth quarter, making just 3 of 22 shots. They led 76-71 midway through the fourth before the Heat closed the game with an 18-2 run.

“We had control and we lost it,” Ben Wallace said. “This is one of those games we will talk about for a while.”

Detroit’s Richard Hamilton scored 19 points and Rasheed Wallace had 13, but they were a combined 2-of-13 in the fourth quarter. Ben Wallace had 13 points and nine rebounds and reserve Antonio McDyess added 12 points.

Detroit had won three straight and five of seven.

“There’s a reason we are 15-13,” Pistons coach Larry Brown said. “We don’t share the ball and we don’t do the little things that we did last year and that is why we are where we are.”

Udonis Haslem had 16 points and seven rebounds and Eddie Jones added 11 points and nine rebounds, showing that the Heat are not just a two-man team.

The Pistons were ahead 20-17 after the first quarter and 47-41 at halftime, leading after the first half for just the ninth time in 28 games this season.

O’Neal was held to eight points in the first half on 3-of-13 shooting, but scored eight points in the third.

“I missed shots I normally make, then Flash saved the day,” O’Neal said, referring to Wade. “Flash is an MVP candidate.”

Van Gundy said Wade’s performance was incredible.

“To have that kind of night, with that kind of efficiency, against a great defensive team like that shows you what kind of player he has become,” he said.

The Pistons started the fourth quarter with a 69-67 lead.

“Shaq gave us a huge lift in the third and then our defense shut them down in the fourth,” Van Gundy said. “That’s what we do.”

Notes: O’Neal leads the Eastern Conference with 1,311,762 All-Star votes, three times more than Ben Wallace, who started at center the past two years. ... The Pistons, who beat the Heat 78-77 at home on Nov. 26, make their only scheduled trip to Miami on April 10. Wade missed 11 of 17 shots in the first meeting. ... The Heat play their next three games at home against Charlotte, Seattle and New York. ... Wade had Miami’s fifth triple-double and first since Lamar Odom had one last season.
