JAKARTA, Indonesia - In a soccer tournament overshadowed by the deadly earthquake and tsunami, Malaysia defeated Indonesia 2-1 Tuesday in a game in which the teams wore black arm bands in tribute to those killed in both countries.
There was a moment of silence for the victims before the game, which was attended by a capacity crowd of more than 80,000 at Bung Karno Stadium.
More than 52,000 people have died in the region and the east coast of Africa following Sunday’s earthquake off the Indonesian coast and subsequent tidal waves. Approximately 27,000 have died in Indonesia and at least 65 in Malaysia.
Liew Kit Kong scored twice for Malaysia in the regional Tiger Cup semifinals. Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto had Indonesia’s goal. The teams will play the second leg of the semifinal on Saturday in Kuala Lumpur.
