2 - Marge Schott, the controversial former owner of the Cincinnati Reds, dies at the age of 75.

4 – The 49ers send controversial wide receiver Terrell Owens to the Ravens for a second-round draft pick, but Owens says he won’t play for Baltimore.

7 - John Henry Williams, who had preserved his father, baseball legend Ted Williams, in liquid nitrogen, dies at the age of 35 of leukemia.

8 – It’s the image of the NHL that will stay with more people longer than any other from the 2003-2004 season. Late in a 9-2 loss to the Colorado Avs, Vancouver Canucks star Todd Bertuzzi sucker-punches the Avalanche’s Steve Moore, who is knocked out and suffers fractured vertebrae in his neck. Moore is out for the season and Bertuzzi is suspended for the remainder of the season and the playoffs.

– The Eagles acquire Terrell Owens in a three-way deal with San Francisco and Baltimore. Owens says he and Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb will be a great combination – “like peanut butter and jelly.”

18 – March Madness kicks off with the nation buzzing about the possibility of Cinderella team St. Joe’s, the No. 1 seed in the East, winning the national title. The Hawks are led by player-of-the-year Jameer Nelson, who is ably assisted by Delonte West. Stanford is another unlikely No. 1 seed in what looks like a wide-open tournament.

20 – The first Cinderella, West's second-seeded Gonzaga, falls to Nevada, 72-66, and Stanford’s hopes end in the second round with a 70-67 loss to Alabama.

21 – Another top seed, Kentucky, falls to UAB, 76-75.

27 – St. Joseph’s run ends one step short of the Final Four, with a 64-62 loss to Oklahoma State. Connecticut crushes Alabama, 87-71 to advance to a Final Four date with Duke.

28 – Grace Park wins her first major with a one-stroke victory over Aree Song at the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Rancho Mirage.

30 – The Major League Baseball season opens in Japan, with the Yankees dropping an 8-3 decision to Tampa. A-Rod goes 1-for-4 in his debut.
