ARCADIA, Calif. - Jockeys David Flores, Casey Lambert, Richard Migliore, Ray Sibille and Rick Wilson are the nominees for the George Woolf Memorial Award, given to a rider whose careers reflect well on themselves and thoroughbred racing.
The winner will be announced in January and will be presented the award in March at Santa Anita. Jockeys nationwide select the winner.
Flores is among the top jockeys in Southern California. He rode Singletary to victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile in October.
Migliore is recovering from a broken wrist but plans to resume his New York-based career soon. He has ridden 3,973 winners.
Lambert has won 2,286 races in his 23-year career, mostly at Sunland Park in New Mexico and Lone Star Park in Texas.
Wilson has won 4,939 races, although his career has been on hold since a serious riding accident at Pimlico in May.
Sibille retired in July, having ridden 4,264 winners over more than 30 years, mostly in Chicago.
The Woolf Award is named for the jockey who rode Seabiscuit and died in an accident at Santa Anita in 1946. Previous winners include Bill Shoemaker, Eddie Arcaro, Laffit Pincay Jr., Angel Cordero Jr., Chris McCarron, Jerry Bailey and Gary Stevens.
