Hot Stove League

LOS ANGELES DODGERS

2005 finish: 71-91, 4th place in NL West

Manager: None

Free agents: RHP Jeff Weaver, RHP Elmer Dessens, IF Jose Valentin, C Paul Bako, IF Olmedo Saenz, RHP Darren Dreifort

On the block: OF Milton Bradley, 1B Hee Seop Choi, LHP Odalis Perez

Looking for: Starting pitcher, first baseman, third baseman, outfielder

What’s going on: Things finally are beginning to fall into place after a period of disarray, and former Giant assistant GM Ned Colletti is the new man on the hot seat. He needs to move quickly on hiring a manager, as the Dodgers are the only team without one. Whoever ends up in charge, it doesn’t appear as if Jeff Weaver will return. That would mean at least one starting pitcher would have to be added, and two if Odalis Perez is dealt after wearing out his welcome. Fifth starter/middle reliever Elmer Dessens is expected to sign with Kansas City. It’s also hard to imagine Milton Bradley wearing a Dodger uniform again, as he figures to be traded. Nomar Garciaparra is a likely option at third base, and perhaps the Dodgers are an option for a Jim Thome deal. One way or the other, they have to add at least one big power bat. Jose Cruz Jr. agreed to a one-year deal to stay out of free agency. Olmedo Saenz likely will be re-signed, but Paul Bako and Jose Valentin won’t be. Wilson Alvarez and Darren Dreifort are expected to retire.
