BOSTON RED SOX
2005 finish: 95-67, 2nd place in AL East
Manager: Terry Francona (3rd season)
Free agents: OF Johnny Damon, 3B Bill Mueller, 1B Kevin Millar, 2B Tony Graffanino, 1B John Olerud, LHP Mike Myers, LHP Mike Stanton, RHP Matt Mantei
On the block: OF Manny Ramirez, LHP David Wells, RHP Keith Foulke
Looking for: Relievers, starting pitcher, power-hitting first baseman, possibly a center fielder
What’s going on: In case you just crawled out from under a rock, the biggest soap opera in the game has unfolded in Boston, where there currently is no general manager after Theo Epstein walked away from $4.5 million over three years to administer the second-biggest payroll in the game. You have to wonder what all parties were thinking here, and the result is that the Red Sox are way behind in a crucial off-season that could see them lose Johnny Damon and Bill Mueller to free agency. Damon will get an offer soon from the Sox, who also reportedly have contacted free agent Brian Giles, just in case. For now, the Sox will operate with a GM-by-committee while interviews – Jim Beattie, Jim Bowden, Wayne Krivsky, etc., continue. And oh by the way, goofy Manny Ramirez has asked yet again to be traded, and this time, it appears as if it could happen. The Angels are the likeliest possibility, and a three-way deal with Arizona that would send Troy Glaus and Darin Erstad to Boston has been discussed. Closer Mike Timlin got a $3.5-million deal to return. David Wells has asked to be traded to a West Coast team. They have made an offer to lefty specialist Mike Myers.
