Since the Heisman Trophy will be handed out and a new national champion (or two) crowned before you know it, please send in your questions promptly using the form below to avoid a delay-of-game penalty!
Q: Which Rivalry Week games do you think are the best, year in and year out?
— K.C. from Cedar Rapids, Iowa
A: For my money, K.C., it’s Florida-Florida State. Just consider the past decade.
In 1994, Florida State scored four unanswered touchdowns that ended in a 31-31 tie. In 1996, No. 2-ranked Florida State defeated No. 1-ranked Florida (setting up a rematch in the Sugar Bowl, in which the Gators gained revenge and won the national championship).
Let’s not forget 1997, when Florida spoiled Florida State’s unbeaten season. Or last season, when there were four lead changes in the fourth quarter, en route to Florida State’s win in the final minute.
Others?
Alabama-Auburn stands alone as a 365-day-a-year obsession. And if Alabama beats Auburn this season — hoo boy! — one of the Iron Bowl’s most memorable chapters will be written.
You can’t beat Michigan-Ohio State for sheer old-school tradition. If one team (or both) remains in the hunt for a national championship, it’s great stuff.
Clemson-South Carolina may not play for the highest of stakes, but it’s highly underrated.
Q: Which games left are must-see if I want to know who will win the Heisman?
— Michael R. from Burbank, Calif.
A: Michael, I think the biggest one is Notre Dame at USC on Nov. 27. If USC quarterback Matt Leinart shines against the Irish on prime-time television, that could push him over the top. The same formula worked two years ago for USC quarterback Carson Palmer.
I’d also check in with Auburn at Alabama, to see Tigers quarterback Jason Campbell. If Utah quarterback Alex Smith puts up big numbers against BYU, that could clinch his trip to New York. I’d also keep my eye on Oklahoma at Baylor. Sooners quarterback Jason White, the defending Heisman winner, could have a monster game, and he’s probably been the hottest candidate of late.
Q: When it comes to naming potential coaching replacements, how come Frank Solich, former Nebraska coach, is never mentioned as a possible replacement or candidate?
— Jim Stuch from Conifer, Colo.
A: Good question, Jim. Steve Spurrier’s name seems to be everywhere, but Solich is out of sight, out of mind, for the most part, although he has been mentioned in the mix to replace John Robinson at UNLV.
Solich is an interesting case because he was part of the Nebraska family for his entire career. He was Tom Osborne’s longtime assistant, then his replacement. He was a winner, getting to the BCS championship game in the 2001 season, but apparently he didn’t win enough in the minds of Nebraska administrators. Solich was fired last season following a 9-3 record.
The knock would probably be on Solich’s reputation as an old-style offensive coach. But certainly, he’s qualified to run a program somewhere. If you’re not the young up-and-comer or the next offensive genius, I guess your name isn’t immediately on the list of coaching speculators.
Q: What’s the future hold for Ron Zook following his stint at Florida?
— Ed from Cincinnati
A: I’m guessing that Zook heads back in the NFL as an assistant, Ed. In 2002, he arrived at Florida after serving as defensive coordinator with the New Orleans Saints.
Zook is 22-14 at Florida entering Saturday night’s game at Florida State, where the Gators haven’t won since 1986. If the Gators somehow win, the scene should be bizarre — the fired coach being carried off the field on his players’ shoulders after beating the hated rival. Florida officials would like Zook to coach the team in its bowl game, but he hasn’t indicated his immediate plans following Saturday night.
Zook was in a no-win situation from the beginning at Florida, following the legend of Steve Spurrier. You might say it’s madness to fire a coach with a winning record each season, but that’s the environment at a place such as Florida. It’s all about winning big and competing for championships. Zook has handled the firing gracefully, and his finest hour may have occurred in last Saturday’s romp over South Carolina. It was what the Gators were supposed to be all along.
Q: Following their departure from the Big East after the season, what does the future hold for Temple football?
— Lewis F. from San Diego
A: The future doesn’t look particularly promising, Lewis. Unless you’re Notre Dame, independent status isn’t the way to go in today’s college football. Scheduling games will be a problem. And obviously, with everything revolving around conferences, getting to a bowl game is next to impossible.
A task force is studying the future of all Temple athletics, primarily football, and there may be some recommendations that will shape the program’s direction. Some have speculated that Temple will drop football and shift to Division I-AA status. Losing the Big East affiliation might be the beginning of the end.
Q: What on earth has gone wrong with George O’Leary at Central Florida?
— Patrick Owens from Madison, Wisc.
A: O’Leary’s first season at Central Florida — a winless effort so far — has been an absolute nightmare, Patrick. UCF followers expected their program to be a force in the Mid-American Conference, but it struggled mightily under former coach Mike Kruczek, and that has continued with O’Leary.
You figured there would be a transition period while the new coach learned about his players, and vice versa, but now it’s clear the program needs a complete overhaul. Give it time. UCF is located in fertile recruiting territory, and O’Leary will get things going when the Golden Knights land in their new home, the revamped Conference USA.
