It worked for Alex Rodriguez, so why not Nomar Garciaparra?

Garciaprra would consider switching positions to second or third base, the free-agent shortstop has told friends, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

The move would make it possible for the New York Yankees to acquire Garciaparra to play second, the newspaper reported.

Rodriguez accepted a move to play third base when he was traded to the Yankees from the Texas Rangers last season.

With A-Rod at third, Derek Jeter at short and Garciaparra at second, the Yankees would have three of the top shortstops in the game playing in their infield.

The Yankees have stated that their top offseason focus is to acquire more starting pitching. GM Brian Cashman told the Daily News he wouldn't comment on specific players but did say the team is "open to any concept that makes us better."

Last season, Miguel Cairo started at second for the Yankees.

"We like what Miguel Cairo did for us," Cashman told the Daily News. "We'll review him first and then assess the rest of the market. It's too early for us to target anyone specifically.

"We're not in any big rush here. We have decisions to make, but not many for a 101-win team."

Cashman declined to say whether he had spoken with Garciaparra or his agent, Arn Tellem.

Garciaprra hit .380 with nine homers and 41 RBIs last season for the Cubs and Red Sox. He played just 43 games because of injuries.

Garciaparra is a career .322 hitter with 182 homers and two batting titles.
