Olympic medalists Jennifer Rodriguez, Joey Cheek win races

WEST ALLIS, Wis. - Olympic medalist Jennifer Rodriguez won the 500- and 1,000-meter races at the U.S. Long Track Speedskating Team competition on Friday.

Olympian Joey Cheek won the men's 500 in the first of four days of Fall World Cup Qualifying to determine who will race in international events this season. Qualifying continues through Monday at the Pettit National Ice Center.

In the women's 500, Rodriguez won in 39.19 seconds to beat Chris Witty, who finished in 40.01. Elli Ochowicz was third at 40.09. In the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, Rodriguez captured bronze in the 1,000 and 1,500, and Witty gold in the 1,000.

Cheek skated a 35.90 to win the men's 500 by one-tenth of a second over Tucker Fredricks. Casey FitzRandolph, the 2002 Olympic gold medalist, was third in 36.07.

Rodriguez skated to an easy victory in the 1,000 (1:17.60), nearly three seconds faster than Amy Sannes. Erin Porter was third at 1:22.96.

In the men's 1,000, Nick Pearson won in 1:11.22 to edge Cheek by .01. Cheek earned bronze in the event in 2002.
