Ten-city tour to honor soccer gold medalists
Hamm, Foudy, Fawcett will play in series that starts Sept. 25
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - A 10-city farewell tour for longtime U.S. soccer stars Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Joy Fawcett will kick off Sept. 25 in Rochester.
The U.S. team will play Iceland to begin the “Fan Celebration Tour.” It will be the final appearances for Hamm, the career goal-scoring leader in international soccer; Foudy, who played every minute of the last three Olympics and World Cups; and Fawcett, the anchor of the American defense that led it to the gold medal in Athens last month.
All three won two World Cups and two Olympics in their careers and have announced their retirements.
“We approach these games as let’s put on a show for the fans and play hard and enjoy it,” Foudy said Monday. “The good thing about this is you can tell the coach you needed 15 touches on the ball to entertain the fans, or try to nutmeg everyone out there to put on a show.
“It still will be very competitive, because that is this group and we want to do well.”
Added Hamm:
“Obviously it will not be the same intensity as the Olympics, and I don’t think any of us could handle that. We come in without practice or any type of schedule like prior to the Olympics.
“But at same time we enjoy the environment and I can celebrate the opportunity I have to play one last time.”
Other dates and sites and opponents for the tour are:
Sept. 29 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh against Iceland; Oct. 3 at PGE Park in Portland, Ore., vs. New Zealand; Oct. 10 at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati against New Zealand; Oct. 16 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City vs. Mexico; Oct. 20 at Soldier Field in Chicago vs. Ireland; Oct. 23 at Reliant Stadium in Houston against Ireland; Nov. 3 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., vs. Denmark; Nov. 6 vs. Denmark at an undetermined site; and a 10th game with the opponent and site to be determined.
