ATHENS, Greece - Jamie Dwyer’s overtime goal gave Australia its first gold medal in men’s field hockey on Friday.

Dwyer scored in the eighth minute of overtime, when his shot deflected off defender Troy Elder and shot past goalkeeper Guus Vogels for the 2-1 win.

The Australian men had settled for silver in three previous Olympics. Their only other major title came at the World Cup in 1986.

The Netherlands was trying to join India as the only teams to win three consecutive gold medals. Instead, it wound up with a second silver in two nights — the women lost to Germany in field hockey a day earlier.

Ronald Brouwer scored his first goal of the tournament in the 29th minute, putting the Netherlands ahead. Brouwer took a long pass from his brother Matthijs at the 25-yard-line, dribbled in, sidestepped the Australian goalkeeper and flicked it past a diving Stephan Mowlam.

Dwyer helped Travis Brooks tie it two minutes into the second half, drawing the goalkeeper away and creating room for his teammate to slam it in.

In the bronze medal game, Bjoern Michel scored in overtime to give Germany a 4-3 win over Spain.
