Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, who won a silver in the 100 backstroke and swims at Auburn University, took bronze in 2:12.72.

Katie Hoff, a 15-year-old who swims at the same North Baltimore club as Michael Phelps, was in contention, but faded on the freestyle leg and finished seventh in 2:13.97.

Hoff didn’t make the 400 IM final Saturday and vomited because of nerves after her preliminary heat.

Beatrice Caslaru of Romania, the silver medalist at Sydney, was eighth and last.
