The much heralded pair, multiple champions over the years, were beaten 17-14 15-8 by seventh-seeded Danes Jonas Rasmussen and Rikke Olsen of Denmark.

The result was the second major surprise in two days after China’s Lin Dan, the top seed, lost to unseeded Ronald Susilo of Singapore in the men’s singles on Sunday.

But the Chinese underlined their strength in depth when second seed Chen Hong of China beat the highly regarded Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark 12-15 15-5 15-9 in their first-round match.

Chen was joined in round two by compatriot and fourth-seed Bao Chunlai who brushed aside Shoji Sato of Japan 15-6 15-5.

In the women’s singles there were quarter-final victories for the top three seeds, all from China -- Gong Ruina, Zhang Ning and Zhou Mi.

They were joined in the semi-finals by Mia Audina, once of Indonesia but now of the Netherlands.

She swept away Briton Tracey Hallam, conqueror of Denmark’s Camilla Martin on Sunday, 11-0 11-9.
