Serena withdraws from Rogers Cup

Williams joins list of missing top players

MONTREAL - Serena Williams withdrew Sunday from the $1.3 million Rogers Cup due to a left knee injury she sustained at last week’s Acura Classic.

“I am so disappointed that I will not be able to play the Rogers Cup as I have really been enjoying the summer hardcourt tennis season,” said Williams, who was ranked No. 1 in the tournament after Friday’s draw. “But, following my MRI on Saturday . . . and on the advice of my doctors and physical therapists, I have made the difficult decision to give my knee more time to fully recover.”

The Rogers Cup already is missing several of the WTA’s top players, including defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne, Kim Clijsters, Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport.
