Adam CoglianeseNEW YORK - Peace Rules surged past Newfoundland and former Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide in the stretch to win Saturday’s Grade 1 $500,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.
Peace Rules set a rapid pace heading into the stretch and was pressured by Funny Cide and Newfoundland. The 4-year-old colt led through six furlongs in 1:09 1/5 and 1:33 4/5 for a mile.
Funny Cide slipped through along the rail and moved a neck ahead nearing midstretch, while Newfoundland also moved up. Nearing the wire, Peace Rules surged ahead, beating Newfoundland by a neck, with Funny Cide a nose back in the field of eight.
Peace Rules carried 120 pounds and Jerry Bailey the distance in 1:59 2/5 on the fast track. The colt by Jules-Hold to Fashion won for the third time in five starts this year and earned $300,000 for Edmund A. Gann.
Peace Rules returned $8.40, $5.40 and $4.10. Newfoundland paid $8.40 and $6, and Funny Cide returned $4.40 to show.
In the $250,000 Prioress Stakes, Friendly Michelle beat Feline Story by 2¼ lengths in the 57th running of the race for 3-year-old fillies.
The Bob Baffert-trained daughter of Artax carried 119 pounds and Corey Nakatani six furlongs in 1:09 for her third win in five starts this year. She earned $150,000 for Ed Friendly and paid $5.70, $3.40 and $2.80.
Feline Story returned $14 and $8.40, and Forest Music paid $5.20 to show.
Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes hero I'll Have Another had a second tour of Belmont Park's main track Thursday.
