Mets manager Terry Collins said on WFAN on Friday that he's leaning toward Jon Niese to start Opening Day if Johan Santana (shoulder) isn't ready.
Santana is currently long-tossing and is still about five to seven days away from returning to the mound, so Collins admitted that his readiness for Opening Day is a question. Niese had a career-best 3.40 ERA over 30 starts last season and would be the natural alternative if he needs more time.
