Lewand: Stafford extension not for cap relief
Matthew Stafford - QB - Detroit Lions
Feb. 16, 2013 - 8:35 PM ET

Lions president Tom Lewand intends to rework Matthew Stafford's contract, but not for salary-cap relief.

"The reason to have an extension with Matthew, just like the reason to have the extension with Calvin [Johnson] last year, was to secure their services for a long period of time," said Lewand. Stafford has two years left on his contract, and is due a $12 million base salary in 2013 with a $20.8 million cap hit. Regardless of what Lewand says, the Lions could clear a bunch of room under the cap by restructuring (and extending) Stafford's deal.
