Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard's assault trial has begun in Nebraska.
Dennard is charged with third-degree assault on an officer, resisting arrest and third-degree assault. The "assault on an officer" charge is a felony, and comes with a maximum sentence of five years in jail. The charges stem from an incident that happened on the eve of last year's draft. Viewed as a potential day-two pick before his run-in with the law, Dennard ended up falling to the Pats in round seven. He started seven games and intercepted three passes as a rookie.
