Jaguars switching to a zone-blocking scheme
Maurice Jones-Drew - RB - Jacksonville Jaguars
Feb. 7, 2013 - 12:15 PM ET

New Jaguars OC Jedd Fisch plans to install a zone-blocking scheme.

The Jags previously ran a power-running scheme, but Fisch is a disciple of Alex Gibbs -- Mike Shanahan's offensive line coach in Denver. As proven by teams such as those Broncos and the current Texans/Redskins, zone-blocking has the potential to yield massive lanes when executed correctly. But when it fails, as it did in Oakland this season, the results can be hard to watch. The switch is another caution flag for Maurice Jones-Drew, who is coming off surgery to repair a mid-foot fracture and has never played in this scheme. Expect Jacksonville to place a new emphasis on athletic moving offensive linemen in the draft and free agency.
