Tigers, Scherzer avoid arb. with 1-year deal

Tigers and RHP Max Scherzer avoided arbitration Monday by agreeing to a one-year, $6.725 million contract.

The two sides settled at the midpoint of figures exchanged last month. Scherzer was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter and is under team control through 2014. He posted a 3.74 ERA and 231/60 K/BB ratio over 187 2/3 innings last season while earning $3.75 million.
