Schwartz: No plans to switch to 4-3 defense
Ndamukong Suh - DL - Detroit Lions
Jan. 21, 2013 - 2:00 PM ET

Lions coach Jim Schwartz says he has no plans to abandon his "Wide 9" scheme and switch to a 3-4 defense.

There had been whispers the Lions were considering such a move after they registered a disappointing 34 sacks in 2012. Detroit is also poised to lose 4-3 DE Cliff Avril to free agency. "We predominately play a Wide 9, but we play other fronts," Schwartz said. "You never say never, but that's our base front." A more imposing pass rush will be a must if the Lions are to get off the mat following their disastrous 2012.
