Report: RG3 to undergo LCL surgery Wednesday
Robert Griffin III - QB - Washington Redskins
Jan. 8, 2013 - 9:15 PM ET

Robert Griffin III will undergo LCL surgery Wednesday, and doctors will then determine whether his ACL has been damaged.

Initial tests showed a partial tear of the ACL, but it's still not clear if that is damage from his previous surgery. Griffin had only minor tears and stretching to his LCL in early December; it appears that he indeed suffered a more complete tear in the season-ending loss to the Seahawks. One doctor tells the Washington Post that LCL surgery requires a longer rehab process than ACL surgery, with a recovery timetable that could last 8-12 months. The length of the rehab depends whether the ligament can be repaired or if more extensive reconstruction is required. If RGIII does have an ACL tear, however, it won't necessarily lengthen the rehab.
