Francisco Cervelli suffered a whiplash injury on a foul tip while catching in the Venezuelan Winter League and was flown back to Tampa last week for an examination.
An MRI in Venezuela came back clean, but the Yankees didn't want to take any chances, especially with his concussion history. Cervelli was playing catch at the team's complex on Monday, so it doesn't sound too serious. "It was just a case of us being overly cautious," said Cashman. "He's fine and we're sending him back to Venezuela to finish out the season." Now that Russell Martin is in Pittsburgh, Cervelli and Chris Stewart are poised to share playing time behind the plate in 2013.
