Red Sox downplay interest in OF Bobby Abreu

Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox observed Bobby Abreu's workout in Venezuela as "nothing more than a scouting assignment."
Alex Speier of WEEI.com was first to report news of the Red Sox attending the workout. Lauber speculates that Abreu could make sense as a left-handed-hitting outfielder to split time in left field with Jonny Gomes, but it appears unlikely the Red Sox will ultimately sign him.
