R. Palmer ousted in 12-hole playoff in Texas
June 4, 2013 - 11:10 AM ET

It took 48 holes, but the fourth survivor of the U.S. Open sectional qualifier at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas is in the field at Merion.

Ryan Palmer and Zack Fischer concluded regulation in 7-under-par 135. They headed to sudden death and matched eight pars before darkness mercilessly fell on Monday night. Returning to the course at 7:30 a.m. CT, they played another four holes before Fischer escaped, Palmer settling for first alternate from the site. Dallas residents Jordan Spieth, Edward Loar and Matt Weibring shared medalist honors at 7-under 134. Loar recorded consecutive eagles to polish off his second-round 64. Notables that failed to qualify include: 139--Martin Flores ... 141--Justin Leonard; Jonathan Moore ... 142--Scott Verplank ... 143--Todd Hamilton ... 154--Will Strickler.
