Nick O'Hern shot 1-under-par 72-71=143 at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier at Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., one of two sites decided this morning.
The lefty buried just four birdies against three bogeys to finish six strokes short of joining a playoff for the final of three berths into the major. Weather prevented this site from concluding on Monday, but amateur Kevin Phelan (9-under 65-70=135) and John Hahn (8-under 65-71=136) went to bed last night knowing that they had punched their tickets to Merion. After darkness fell, John Nieporte and amateur David Snyder returned this morning to vie for the final tee time. They finished regulation at 7-under 137. Nieporte's second-round 66 included a hole-in-one at the par-3 third. Other notables that failed to qualify include: 143--Manuel Villegas ... 145--Matthew Borchert.
