June 3, 2013 - 11:00 PM ET

With a 36-hole aggregate of 10-under-par 62-71=133, Bio Kim cruised to medalist honors at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Newport Beach, Calif.

The former PGA TOUR member opened at Newport Beach Country Club before taking his talents over to Big Canyon Country Club for the second round. His trip to Merion will mark his first start in a major. Fellow former members Steven Alker and Roger Tambellini shared runner-up honors at 6-under 137. Amateurs Max Homa and Cory McElyea survived a three-way playoff for the final two of five berths. Jesse Schutte (137) had to settle for first alternate from the site. Notables that failed to qualify include: 143--Jeff Brehaut ... 145--Tony Finau ... 148--Chris Riley ... 150--Joel Kribel ... 152--Andy Miller ... 155--Beau Hossler, who held the lead at one point on the weekend at last year's U.S. Open at Olympic Club.
