Rory McIlroy carded a 5-under-par 33-34=67 in his opening round of the Wells Fargo Championship, becoming the fifth to share the clubhouse lead.
McIlroy was the first of the five from today's late draw. He landed 15 greens in regulation and circled seven birdies, all of which dropping in from inside nine feet. He missed three attempts inside 10 feet, two of which birdie tries. The other resulted in a bogey at the par-4 ninth hole, his first of two on the round. He's been all or nothing at this tournament in three previous appearances. After breaking through for his first PGA TOUR victory in 2010 at Quail Hollow, closing out that title with a course-record 62, he missed the cut in 2011, and then lost in a playoff last year.
