Roddick's match washed out at U.S. Open

In his final tournament, U.S. player in first-set tiebreak vs. del Potro

NEW YORK - Andy Roddick's fourth-round match against Juan Martin del Potro at the U.S. Open has been suspended because of rain and is scheduled to resume Wednesday.

Play was halted right after Roddick went ahead 1-0 in a first-set tiebreaker Tuesday night. A little more than a half-hour later, the tournament called off play for the day.

Roddick, the 2003 champion at Flushing Meadows, announced last week the U.S. Open will be last tournament of his career.

Other matches stopped in progress, also in the first, included defending champion Novak Djokovic against No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka, and No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic against No. 19 Philipp Kohlschreiber.

In action that was completed, fourth-seeded David Ferrer advanced to the quarterfinals, coming back from an hour-long rain delay to close out a 7-5, 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory over No. 13 Richard Gasquet.

Ferrer joined Rafael Nadal as the second Spanish player to make the quarterfinals at all four Grand Slams in one year. Nadal, not here in 2012 because of a knee injury, did it in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

Ferrer also beat Gasquet in the round of 16 at the Australian Open to make the quarterfinals.

Ferrer was leading 4-3 when the rain came and the players left the court. When they returned, they traded games before Ferrer broke serve, closing it out on his fifth match point.
