Crawford to have Tommy John surgery Thu.
Carl Crawford - OF - Boston Red Sox
Aug. 21, 2012 - 2:20 AM ET

Carl Crawford will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on his left elbow on Thursday.

An expected move. Crawford was diagnosed with a strained ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow in April and attempted to play through the injury, but surgery was expected at some point. Now that the Red Sox are all but out of contention, it's best that he gets prepared for 2013. The 31-year-old outfielder still has five years and $102.5 million left on his contract.
