Raanan was definitive, declaring that there is no backfield competition with Devin Singletary or rookie RB Cam Skattebo. The Giants, per Raanan, were never going to use Skattebo as a significant part of the team’s rushing attack and always planned on giving the entire backfield to Tracy, who in 2024 went for 839 yards and five touchdowns on the ground and ranked 37th out of 57 qualifying RBs in yards after contact per rush. Skattebo, meanwhile, is set to miss time with a hamstring injury he suffered last week. Tracy last season struggled with drops and fumbles. If he can clean up those issues, Tracy has a shot to see a big weekly workload in the New York offense.

Schefter and Rams beat writers continue to say Stafford, who has been sidelined for weeks with a back issue, will be ready for Week 1. “They don’t want to put any wear and tear on his body,” Schefter said of Stafford, 37, entering his 17th NFL season. If the Rams had a game today, Schefter said, Stafford would be able to suit up and play. There seems to be no long-term issue for Stafford as he gets ready for his fifth season with the Rams. He threw 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season and was not fantasy relevant. Stafford ranked 25th out of 33 qualifying QBs in accuracy in 2024.

The contract includes $23 million guaranteed. Williams has been productive is inefficient over his two seasons as LA’s lead back. Only Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry have more rushing yards over the past two seasons than Williams, who has scored 31 touchdowns since the start of the 2023 regular season. He has ten 100-yard rushing performances over those two years. Williams should continue functioning as the Rams’ unquestioned RB1 in 2025, while rookie RB Jarquez Hunter is the favorite to seize the RB2 role.

Blue’s summer got off to a rough start amid reports that his work ethic was lacking and he had fallen out of favor with members of the Cowboys coaching staff. Things have turned around for the speed-demon rookie, who was taken in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. “When given the opportunity, he’s been taking care of the football, showcasing his speed, athleticism and quality hands,” The Athletic’s Jon Machota said. “Each day that goes by, Blue appears to be getting more comfortable with the offense and speed of the NFL game.” While Javonte Williams and/or Miles Sanders are likely to get first dibs on lead back duties, Blue could seize a much larger role as the season goes on and he shows off his game-breaking speed. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said in late July that Blue — who averaged 5.7 yards per carry in his final two collegiate seasons at Texas — has shown great improvement since his first spring practices. “I think in the spring, he picked it up maybe slower than we had hoped. Not now. He’s got it,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s figuring it out. He’s one of those guys that doesn’t say much, but there’s a big-time competitive fire in there. He wants to be great. He wants to be elite. He’s talented.”

It’s not much of a surprise after Taylor said in July that Burrow and the team’s stars would suit up for the preseason in hopes of preventing yet another slow start to the regular season for Cincinnati. Last year, Burrow completed five of seven preseason passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. It was the first preseason action he had seen since 2021, when he completed his lone preseason attempt. Hopefully Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Chase Brown stay healthy in the preseason. They’ll likely see limited reps in any case.

Expected to be a key part of the Green Bay secondary in 2025, Hobbs — who in March signed a four-year deal worth $48 million — will miss the remainder of training camp and the preseason while recovering from the procedure. Hobbs could be ready for the Packers’ Week 1 game against the Lions, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. Hobbs had surgery on Saturday to repair a partial meniscus tear, which he could have played with, a source told ESPN. Hobbs, who played for the Raiders during his first four NFL seasons, missed six games last season and 16 over the previous three seasons combined because of ankle injuries, a hand injury, and illness. Pro Football Focus graded Hobbs as last year’s 68th best cover corner out of 160 qualifying players.

It’s the latest sign that Tyler Shough, the 40th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, is far from ordained as the Saints’ Week 1 starting quarterback. Rattler has said he “feels like” he’s been the “best quarterback on the field” during the team’s training camp, and Saints camp observers seem impressed with Rattler’s play a year after he completed 57 percent of his attempts for four touchdowns and five interceptions over six starts. Saints head coach Kellen Moore said in late July that the team’s QB rotation would change after the team’s first preseason contest against the Chargers. A solid preseason for Rattler could lock him into the QB1 role for Week 1, though Shough remains likely to see playing time at some point in 2025.

Also notable: Rookie RB Kaleb Johnson is listed as the team’s RB3 behind Warren and Kenneth Gainwell, a Mike Tomlin favorite. Johnson, the 83rd pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, had been listed as a co-starter alongside Warren in the spring. He’s struggled mightily in training camp, particularly in pass protection, where Warren has always excelled. The big-bodied Johnson could still take on short yardage and even goal line opportunities in what should be a run-heavy Pittsburgh offense. It looks like Warren has a chance to establish himself as the team’s clear lead back headed into the season. Warren could benefit from Aaron Rodgers’ late-career willingness to check down. Last season, Jets running backs had the league’s fourth highest target share with Rodgers under center.

Pierce is expected to practice Tuesday after working his way back from a serious quad injury he sustained during spring workouts. Texans beat writer Aaron Wilson said Pierce has “regained his mobility and range of motion while working out on the side with trainers” and passed a physical this week. Functioning strictly as a backup for Joe Mixon in 2024, Pierce rushed for 293 yards and two touchdowns. His production included some lengthy runs, not a surprise considering his explosiveness as Houston’s lead runner in 2022. Pierce could see some early-season run if Mixon (ankle, foot) remains sidelined and requires a ramp-up period before taking over as the team’s primary back. Nick Chubb would likely split the backfield workload with Pierce if both are healthy and Mixon is sidelined.
