American Schmitt wins 200 free, Franklin 4th

France's Muffat wins silver while Australia's Barratt clinches bronze

LONDON - U.S. swimmer Allison Schmitt won the gold medal in the 200-meter freestyle on Tuesday, with compatriot Missy Franklin finishing fourth.

Franklin won her first gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke Monday after having opened her games with a relay bronze.

France's Camille Muffat won the silver while Australia's Bronte Barratt clinched bronze.

Franklin still has four more events to go, giving her plenty of chances to leave London as America's big star with Michael Phelps heading into retirement. His underwhelming performances so far and Ryan Lochte's failure in his last two events swung the spotlight squarely on Franklin.
