Report: Patriots, Welker $6M guaranteed apart
Wes Welker - WR - New England Patriots
July 8, 2012 - 3:25 PM ET

The Boston Globe reports that the Patriots are $6 million in guaranteed money apart in long-term contract talks with Wes Welker.

We don't think Welker is getting a long-term contract, and the large divide supports that notion. Per Globe reporter Greg Bedard, the Patriots "want Welker to take a bit of a discount to stay with Tom Brady." Welker is 31 years old and showed signs of decline down last season's stretch after a mammoth start. The Pats would be silly to commit to Welker as if he were an elite young receiver.
